Jeep Commander, codenamed XK, was rolled out into the market during the year 2006, after being showcased at the 2005 New York Auto Show. It was a midsize SUV with boxier looks than the conventional Grand Cherokee and squared-off sides.
One of the unique aspects of this model was its set of three moon-roofs, which were termed as the “Command View”. With an upright windshield, Jeep Commander was reminiscent of the discontinued third generation Jeep Cherokee (XJ), and had stepped roof.

It was initially offered with a V6 engine along with the new Hemi engine optionally. It was also marketed with an impressive optional entertainment package featuring TV, DVD player and even a rear parking camera.
First Generation (2006-Present)
Commander is still in its first generation, though there have been several changes in the past 3 years, since its launch in 2006.
Commander Limited
The model Limited had a powerful engine, awesome nifty electronics like reverse warning system, power pedals, and heated seats giving it a luxurious feel, while the mixed bag of safety features made the passengers feel safe enough.

It was also offered with a satellite radio and navigation system to add to its capabilities. But, the boxy looks couldn’t cover up for its limited visibility, and cramped quarters.
2007 Commander
There were very few changes in the vehicle, which included minor tweaks in the optional packages and accessories offered in the base trim. The engine, transmission, standard safety features and overall design continued to be the same, and so did the clunky cabin tech that restrained it from gaining high popularity.
2010 Commander
Commander for the year 2010 is powered by a 4.7L V-8 engine, which will be capable of producing 305-horse power. Moreover, an additional 4WD package will also be provided along with hill start assist and hill descent control.
The new tech options will comprise of a revised iPod interface, premium audio, Sirius Backseat TV, and MyGIG Infotainment.

Will the 2011 Commander Become a Reality?
As per the new 5-year restructuring plan of Chrysler-Fiat collaboration, the Jeep Commander will be discontinued from the year 2011. However, things are not clear at this point of time.
As Commander has been one of the star performers in Jeep’s lineup, Chrysler may consider revising their current plan. As of now, the Jeep fans are excited about the release of latest generation Jeep Commander.
